FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 25, 2022 Contact: Dubraska Vale | (202) 234-7174 | dubraska@galatheatre.org A play that explores lack of education, inequality, and classism Washington, D.C. - Paso Nuevo, GALA’s Youth Program, is proud to present the play El puente (The Bridge) by Carlos Gorostiza. This adaptation, with popular music from Argentina, will be performed and produced by the young talents of Paso Nuevo. The play will be presented, in Spanish with English surtitles, at GALA Hispanic Theatre, located at 3333 14th Street NW, Washington DC, on Thursday, August 04, 2022, at 7:00 pm. Admission to the show is free and attendees are required to adhere to the COVID-19 safety measures listed below. El Puente follows two families from different social strata connected by the construction of a bridge. The story focuses on the anticipated return of two men who are working on the bridge and strangely have not returned from work as usual. Set in Buenos Aires in 1947, the familial and social tensions of the play run parallel to the economic crisis which hit Argentina in the era of Peronism. Both families are vulnerable to misfortune, and to rejection by their own clans. This brilliant mixture of tragedy and comedy makes this play one of the classics of Hispanic-American theater. El Puente is the culmination of the Paso Nuevo Summer program, in which students study acting, dance, music, scenic design, costumes, graphic design and painting. With the assistance of their teaching artists, students have been involved in all aspects of the creation of this theatrical piece. The Paso Nuevo Summer Program is made possible with support from the Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs and the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program. Additional funders of Paso Nuevo include the Harman Family Foundation, The Nora Roberts Foundation, Wells Fargo, Rotary Foundation of Washington DC, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, Events DC, the International Monetary Fund, and OST Learn 24.
